Felines Found!

Today we present a special guest post from Milo and Kamala Squeamish. (Today is Milo's 10th birthday!) Our mascot felines want to remind you all that June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.

According to the ASPCA, four million cats and kittens enter shelters every year. That's a lot more kittens than they can show on those tear-jerker public service commercials with Sarah McLaughlin tugging at your goddamn heartstrings. So imagine a channel that is dedicated to running that all day long, everyday with different animals each time. That is the reality. There are a couple of programs new to this year that offer you different ways to participate. If you are able to take in a cat, more than 100 shelters nationwide have agreed to drop their normal adoption fees for the month. Fresh Step will donate $1 for every "Like" on their Facebook page, so even if you aren't in the position to welcome a new kitty into your home, there are things that you can do!

We feel like there are a couple of topics that for some retarded reason remain "controversial," though the right answers are actually quite simple and most of the controversy can be reduced to willful ignorance. Combined with the fact that even progressive vets have a difficult time talking straight about some of these issues, they are often treated delicately. Not us--we are going to club you over the head with the truth. We stand by this as realistic and carefully considered advice for the well-being of the animal, without sparing the feelings of those who feel otherwise.

*Spay or neuter. Just do it. Don't contribute to the already overpopulated felines. You are not a breeder, and even if you do manage to find homes for all your kittens, you are reducing the chance of already sheltered cats being adopted.

*Feed a good food. Foods that have corn as their first ingredient are shit. Quality meals will reduce the risk of disease in the long run, even though it is more expensive up front. Look for chow that has a protein listed at the top. Buy it at a pet store, not the supermarket, if you can--sometimes they even stock locally made foods. (For example, here in Philly look for Annamaet.)

*Microchip your cat--it is cheap and can be done while your animal is down being fixed and can help when Professor Whiskers darts out the door unexpectedly. On that note, don't intentionally let your cat go outside. In the city and suburbs, they have to contend with traffic and in more rural areas, wild animals (birds of prey, larger felines and canines, etc.). You are just asking for a shorter time with your pet if you allow your cat to wander.

*Don't fucking declaw your cat. It is cruel and painful. You are not just removing the claw, you are cutting off bone as declawing removes the toe from the last knuckle on. It is a serious surgery that can take weeks to recover from, and if not done properly, can leave your cat with deformed and sensitive feet for life. And of course it hurts! Don't let insensitive assholes tell you that cats don't feel any pain from this, they do!
If you are hellbent on having a declawed cat, wait until one that has already had this unnecessary surgery is up for adoption.

*Finally, be sure that you are prepared financially for the short term and long term costs of having a cat. If they need any procedure beyond normal yearly vet visits, the bills can add up quickly. Medical care for animals is expensive, just as it is for humans. That being said, it is amazing what can done for your cat's health these days--almost any procedure done for a human can be done for a cat, as long as you can afford it. You owe it to the animal that depends on you to at least have modest savings budgeted for emergency care.

Much, much more information written by animal care professionals can be found at the links below. Please be sure to read about all the in and outs, what-have-yous of adopting a shelter animal. If you can't even take the time to do the research in advance, perhaps pet ownership isn't for you. When you take in an animal you are responsible for its quality of life. It is not something that you give away when you move or because you have a second kid. Your pet trusts you with its life, you better earn that trust.

Weaseling Out of a Comeback

Screeching Weasel
First World Manifesto
Fat Wreck Chords, Released March 15, 2010

What a weird couple weeks in which I have attempted to post a review of this record. I picked up the album on Tuesday the 15th, and gave it a couple of spins with an open mind, as I am certainly not as passionate about Screeching Weasel as many of the other bands that we review. (They are much more Mrs. Squeamish's territory.) But I felt like this was an important album to consider--it's been more than a decade since any new music was released under the Screeching Weasel moniker. This was Ben Weasel's big comeback after releasing some moderately well received solo albums. I wasn't really in a rush to post my thoughts; I knew that any number of outlets received advanced copies and had reviews up prior to the album's release. So I simply started jotting down notes as I listened to the record a couple of times, content with publishing my two cents within a week of the album's release.

But then it happened. Three days later, at the Fat Wreck showcase at South by Southwest, Ben took several swings at a female audience member, who supposedly was throwing ice at him, or spitting at him, or both, depending on who you ask. Then, in a blind rage, Ben tried to connect with one of the female club owners who was on stage trying to intervene. I have no interest in being another blog that puts up the embarrassing video--you can google it your lazy self if you want to see it (again, probably). Nor do I want to put up a public scolding of a grown man who knows that he stepped way, way over the line and was consequently left by his band and had to cancel the tour that accompanied the release of First World Manifesto.

It became hard to separate the man from the music, even though the album is pretty ok. Sure, some of Vapid's back up vocals sound suspiciously cleaned up and Riverdales-y or Methadones-y. SW has never really had that super produced sound, but he lays down an awesome solo on "Totem Pole." And Ben Weasel is no lazy lyricist--in fact, the album is more enjoyable having read the lyrics in the liner notes. Ben stuffs a lot of words into his lines, and drops some excellent five dollar words and phrases, beginning with his diatribe about the current state of punk, "Follow Your Leaders," through the obligatory quasi-political song "Come and See the Violence Inherent in the System." Joe Queer contributes some nice Ba-Ba-Ba backing vocals on "Creepy Crawl." In general, lots of shit talking, lots of pessimism, but what else is new? Throughout his career, Ben has purposely played up his curmudgeon status to his own benefit--who wouldn't expect a SW album chock full of insults? But it's hard to listen to him sneer about punks who are "frat boys with sillier haircuts," when he himself acts like one.

So Ben's out of control and unacceptable treatment of the fairer sex has now lead to the (millionth) disbanding of Screeching Weasel, not to mention the cancellation of his three day anniversary fest in Chicago. Philly also loses out because tonight's now terminated date at the Troc would have been the first major club gig for everyone's favorite Jersey/NYC punk/surf quartet, Night Birds. Tinging their always-on-the-brink-of-disaster punk with a heavy dose of surf guitar, the Birds are getting ready to release their first full length, and have just put out a comp of their earlier, vinyl only material on Grave Mistake. With both of these dropping this year, as well as their first gigs in Europe, 2011 is going to be a big year for Night Birds. Right now, the Troc would have been a huge space for this band, but don't be fooled--these guys take being in a band seriously, and if they can continue that commitment through the year, they are going to be moving out of the basement/art space shows quickly. It's just a shame that Philadelphia lost an early opportunity to catch this up and coming act.

Keeping Watch over their Flock by Night

The holiday season is quickly drawing to a close. Thanksgiving is a distant memory, Hanukkah is long gone, Christmas is less than a week away, and New Years is just around the corner. As we stop celebrating and moving into the bleaker depths of winter, American's sense of generosity starts to drop along with the temperature. It must be remembered that while donations made late November through the end of the calendar year are sincerely appreciated, the plight of the less fortunate is often only beginning its harshest season. With that in mind, we encourage all of our readers to support Philabundance, started as a food bank in 1984, but has developed into so much more. Indeed, it is a full scale charity that tries to patch holes in many different aspects of hunger relief.

Philabundance runs a traditional full food bank/soup kitchen year round, but they also offer quite a few other services. Most interestingly, they run a culinary school where all the practice meals are given out to those in need. On Mother's Day weekend, a collection specifically aimed at the needs of mothers and infants is organized. Philadundance partners with a number of different grocery stores, mega-stores that carry food (like Target and Walmart), and local farms to collect items that are still edible, but must be discarded due to strict standards for sale. There are programs that are specifically geared towards senior citizens whose income does not allow them proper nutrition. Always ready to go are 30 pound emergency food boxes for those that need immediate assistance. Their Fresh for All program puts fresh fruits and vegetables in the hands of those for whom the rapidly escalating price of these essentials makes them unattainable.

Philadundance is truely thinking outside the box when it comes to food and nutrition and how to meets the growing and diverse needs of the city. By providing a variety of programs that address many facets of hunger, they are ensuring that those in need are receiving food that is targeted towards their specific needs. It is also important to remember that during the Thanksgiving/Christmas holiday, Philabundance and other soup kitchen type charities can usually provide for their clients. However, these programs run year round and are understocked most of the time. It is important to remember that there are homeless/poverty stricken/mentally ill/elderly/children in need all the time.

We here at I Hope You're not Squeamish urge you to reconsider your New Year's resolutions. While there is certainly nothing wrong with the "lose twenty pounds" type promises, please also remember to include others when considering the upcoming year. All we ask is that you what you can. If you already contribute to charity, please try to dig deep and include a modest increase. For sure, 2010 was hard enough for those who found their incomes slashed, or were victims of other tragedies, but remember, if you are reading this, there are people in far worse positions. Consider also that your contribution to charity does not have to be strictly monetary; donations of time and talent are also sorely needed and would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, and we wish you the happiest and most magical of New Years.

Pitbulls and the Women who Love Them

In the on deck circle, our good friends at Pinups for Pitbulls. They have a serious event happening in the not too far future that anyone and everyone should attend. Saturday, October 23rd, they are holding one of their Pitbull Awareness Day seminars. In addition, this event will be the release party to celebrate the annual retro-model/bully-breed monthly calendar. This is going to be kind of big deal around here.

Originally slated as an all day event at a gentleman's club in south Philly, this has been moved to Shampoo Nightclub (North 8th Street and Willow, near the Electric Factory), and has been divided into two events. The first is an all ages event from 1PM to 4PM and will feature speakers, pinup girls, art, adoptable animals and of course, PfP's world famous bully-breed calendar. The night time part of this shin dig is 21+ and features some of the area's best known burlesque dancers/models and is being hosted by Shorty and Hercules of Animal Planet's Pit Boss. The ladies of PfP go way back with Shorty and his rescue (they were featured on the premier episode) and between the drinks, food and ladies, this party for a cause promises to be a good time for all who attend.

Besides rehoming bully-breed dogs in need, one of the most important issues that Pinups for Pitbulls pursues is campaigning against breed specific legislation. BSL are laws and ordinances, usually at the town/city level, that make illegal or restrict ownership of certain types of dogs. The problem with blanket legislation is that it punishes docile, well behaved, trained and friendly animals based solely on their breed. Furthermore, there is little evidence that this is even effective in preventing attacks, since small dogs are just as likely to bite. (Though, admittedly, a Chihuahua is less likely to do major damage. Hence why there are statistics and reports of Pitbull attacks, but not so much on hostile 12 pound breeds. Just because it doesn't make the five o'clock news doesn't mean that some of those pocket pet pooches aren't capable of inflicting pain.) Furthermore, BSL just furthers the myth that Pits, Rotties, Dobermans, etc. are naturally more dangerous dog, when there is absolutely no evidence to back this up.

Please, if your place of residence is considering this type of action, educate yourself about the reality of the situation, and encourage your local government to punish the crime, not the breed. (Or even dogs that simply look "vicious." Often times German Shepherds, Bulldogs, Mastiffs, etc. are swept into the "Pitbull" category, along with mutts of all descriptions.) Pinups for Pitbulls can provide you with copious amounts of information on the topic, both at their awareness seminar on the 23rd and through their website.

Checkerboard Charity

The crossroads of music and activism is among our favorite topics here at I Hope You're not Squeamish. So we are pleased to present to you Skanking and Moshing for a Cause. Out of King of Prussia, PA, 18 year old Evan Garo (sometimes Phoenix) is keeping basement shows alive in the suburbs and, as their name suggests, proceeds from all their events and releases are dedicated to charity. In his senior year of high school, Evan held two shows in his parents' basement to complete his senior graduation project. The money made from one went to help his folks purchase a ramp for Evan's wheelchair bound father, who has Multiple Sclerosis. The other show's door fees, $350, were donated to the National M.S. Society. Last month, Skanking and Moshing for a Cause put out a 26 song benefit cd featuring tracks by 26 different bands, many of them from the Philly area and a decent amount picked from Garo's own backyard in the suburbs west and north of the city.

This is exactly what we love to see. Young people keeping it local, trying to put something positive together using the resources available to them, and then turning around and reinvesting in society instead of themselves. Evan is passionate about DIY shows and said that there are a few halls and churches out near him that are supportive of homegrown music, but the events are usually indie rock or cover band oriented. By hosting the event himself, Garo can make sure that punk and ska bands can have a well coordinated, smooth running event that draws a decent crowd. Skanking/Moshing hopes to book other events in the future, this time setting their sights on the plight of child soldiers in Africa. He admits that he is aiming high, but is quick to point out that even his small contribution affects the kids who go to his shows and hopefully that effect ripples out.

Garo and Skanking and Moshing for a Cause balances high hopes with measure of realistic goals and pragmatism. While he wants to book benefit shows at bars and real clubs, he is willing to book shows in basements, even his own, for as long as it takes for the word to spread. His sampler is a homemade CD-R and the art is photocopied 'zine style, but he has aspirations for a second benefit disc with more professional presentation. His PMA is pretty inspiring. And its contagious. Based solely on some limited web promotion and word of mouth, the shows that Skanking/Moshing threw brought together well over a dozen bands (over the two nights, all of which donated their time and talent), a couple of hundred dollars that was donated to charity, and gave 50 or so kids something positive to do with their weekend. Not too shabby for an 18 year old kid trying it out for the first time.

The best part is, the music is not even terrible. Garo's tastes obviously are weighted towards the ska and reggae inspired punk and he manages to avoid the terrible, terrible hardcore that dominates so many basement shows. Not every band on the benefit CD is a winner, but there were some nice surprises in there, with a couple of two-tone styled bands that obviously know the history of their sub genre, and can really play tunes that are genuinely rockin' steady. If you don't like horns, this sampler isn't going to be for you, but with an open mind, and only 5 bucks that will be donated to a good cause, you can hear a couple of bands that will be playing (and some that already do), legitimate venues in Philly. In particular, be on the lookout for the Sheckies, the Mahlors and the Heavy Beat, all featured on the Skanking/Moshing comp, at a club/basement near you.

We wish Skanking and Moshing for a Cause the best of luck. For an organization that is still just a puppy with room to grow, they seem to have a pretty good head on their shoulders. We here at I Hope You're not Squeamish can't wait to see what else Evan and his crew of bands are able to put together in the future. Please check out their myspace page for more information on upcoming shows, releases and other charitable events. Also, we will second Skanking/Moshing's suggestions that you support both the National MS Society and UNICEF for the freedom of child soldiers in Africa and world wide. Both of these organizations do good work that benefits thousands of people--the victims of these tragic circumstances and their families.

Protect Philly Art

Help! Philly's art scene is in desperate need of your help. Several city council members have introduced legislation for approval that would significantly hinder promoter's and venue's efforts to throw low cost, DIY, last minute or informally organized events. While there is nothing inherently wrong with the city council's interest in the safety of its art patrons, the bill goes overboard with regulation to which many of the smaller art galleries and concert spaces could not realistically adhere. The proposed bill would require at least 30 days notice for all events, very stringent regulations on a laundry list of alcohol and security plans, and almost impossible to meet requirements involving contracts between promoters and venues and estimated attendance. All promoters and venues would be affected by the new law and the legislation makes no distinction between large, corporately owned spaces like the Electric Factory, and the smallest of the small bars and promoters like R5 and nontraditional venues like Danger Danger Gallery and Ava House. It would essentially be an end to the Philadelphia art scene as we know it. It would cause a rise in ticket prices, a significant decrease in all ages events (already a major problem in Philly) and an almost probable end in DIY art gatherings and house shows. This is a disaster. Please take the time to read the bill and sign the petition against this major setback to our precious creative forces.

How to Clean a Couple O' Things

Here is a golden opportunity for our Philadelphia Squeamies, specifically our Roxborough followers. There is a community clean up day scheduled for this Saturday, May 15 organized by the Roxborough Business Exchange. They are going to cover the main streets through downtown Roxy and then lend a hand to some of the residents who are elderly or handicapped and need assistance with their spring cleaning. This is a great, simple activity that immediately benefits the community, both the residents and the local businesses. Now admittedly, yer pal Mikey Squeamish resides in 19128, so I would reap the benefits of this event's success as much as anyone and more than many, so there is an inherent amount selfish motivation for encouraging everyone out there to ride up to my 'hood and start cleaning. However, if you're not coming out to Roxborough, check out your own neighborhood development group and see what activities you might be able to participate in that would send something back your way. Below are links to just a few that I found on a general search of Philly neighborhood associations.

Roxbourough Development Corporation
South of South Neighborhood Association
Northern Liberties Neighbors Association
Logan Square Neighborhood Association
Society Hill Civic Association
West Passyunk Point Neighborhood Association
Center City Resident's Association
Fairmont Civic Association
Fishtown Neighborhood Association
Old City Civic Association
Norris Square Neighborhood Project
Mt. Airy Neighborhood Association
Manayunk Development Corporation

All of these groups have community clean up days and other beneficial activities organized. Someone in your neighborhood is bringing the community together, you just have to put in a minimal effort to find them and help out. A donation of your time and talents is just as valuable as a monetary one. Take some time and find the organization in your neighborhood and volunteer, even if your contribution is minimal. By taking pride in your neighborhood and giving just a little of yourself, everyone reaps the rewards.

Follow the Three Way

Ladies and gentlemen, if you will kindly direct your attention to the front of the room. Submitted humbly for your approval is One Life One Chance, a new project headed by H2O front man Toby Morse. The straight edge for life singer has started taking his good, clean fun lifestyle to the kids by doing speaking engagements in classrooms to show an alternative to the drug and alcohol pressures faced by youth. As anyone familiar with the music of the hardcore stalwarts knows, Toby has always used H2O as a chance to spread his message of healthy living. Morse, 40, has yet to take a drink, drag, toke, bump, line, or whatever. Yet he has carefully made sure to never be overly preachy about it, always just making it known that choosing not to smoke, drink or drug has been a positive choice for him. Also, Toby has never insulated himself; from the very beginning, he has been surrounded by the same pressures as anyone else. H2O has been playing shows with Jimmy Gestapo and Murphy's Law for years, and that guy can't even play a 40 minute set without his Jagermeister bottle and a spliff, for Pete's sake. Toby's choice is for real; he means it 'cause he lives it.

One Life One Chance is a 45 minute presentation that chronicles Toby's life growing up in Washington, DC and continues through relocating to NYC and his experience in the punk rock scene. Morse now lives in LA, married with a son. Using a power point slide show, he shows how his lifestyle affected him, both in the immediate and long term senses, and urges kids not to fall victim to peer pressure and to make responsible choices. He not only exposes kids to the straight edge lifestyle, but also touches on the importance of active living and healthy eating habits, including vegetarianism, and the power of positive mental attitude and self image.
Now, we here at I Hope You're Not Squeamish have always believed in the existence of an animal that can indulge in spirits in a responsible and reasonable manner. We can claim no personal allegiance to the straight edge way of life, but we will fully support anyone who is trying to genuinely help people, especially kids. Plus, there is a world of difference between chemically altering yourself because you like it and want to and can handle the consequences, and doing it simply because everyone else is. Take a look at the feedback section on One Life One Chance's website. Some of these kids legitimately have never considered that you can be crazy and wild without partying. Kids do need to be reminded that you truly can be an individual (though it is sometimes scary and you will feel alienated) and that your choices, whatever they may be, shape who you become. We award 27 gold stars to Toby Morse for One Life One Choice and fully encourage you to book him to speak to your class/school/religious group/community group/whatever if you are the kind of person who can arrange such things. Scout's honor, you won't be disappointed.

Now with 75% less Microfilm

This summer, we highly recommend that you revert back to the days of Underoos and go out and get yourself a library card. Not only can you imerse yourself in some fine literature (and stop reading those g.d. Nicholas Sparks "novels." I think that Target must be forcibly stripped of their license to sell the printed word.) but you can also check out some music, rent movies, catch up on periodicals with no subscription fees, enjoy free air conditioning and, perhaps best of all, get yourself some inexpensive education. Most public libraries offer many resources that do not include checking something out at the circulation desk. Now, certainly the size and location of your particular library is going to affect how much or little they offer and on what topics, but usually if your branch isn't offering something interesting, you can check out your county location for some more variety. Here are some of the things that are happening at the Free Library of Philadelphia, just in the two weeks or so:

Seminars for the under- and uninsured
Small Space/City Gardening
Citizenship classes
Poetry Slams for Teens
Programs for developing Financial Responsibility
English as a Second Language
SAT Prep

Some of these are free, some cost a few dollars. Some you have to register in advance, some you can just show up for. None the less, these are viable alternatives to things that are held at much greater cost within the private sphere. Your tax dollars already go to at least partially fund these programs; you should take advantage of these things. Theoretically, once you apply your new knowledge, the minimal registration fees should pay for themselves in the long run. People would be so much less upset at paying taxes if they utilized more of the programs towards which their dollars were funneled. Plus, by educating yourself, you will not only reap the benefits yourself, but so will your community, either by consuming less, creating more, participating more actively, etc. So upgrade your gray matter, 'cause one day it may matter. Bonus points if you are one in a thousand who actually has a hot librarian. (I'm just saying, nerdery is definitely sexy in the right proportions.)

Free Library of Philadelphia
American Library Association

I try not to be one for afterthoughts, but it occurred to me the other day that kids growing up today (and probably even some kids who are already on their way to college, whoa) will never know a true, honest to goodness card catalog. They are doomed to the virtual, digital version forever. I haven't been back to my childhood library in years, but I'll bet the chest of drawers with the oak tag chronicle of volumes is long gone. There was something comforting about the worn note cards where author's names and titles of epic tales were hacked apart due to a lack of physical room on the card. Some of the monikers were badly abbreviated, some were simply divorced of their endings and ended abruptly with a faceless period. Now on my bucket list, my own personal card catalog. --toodles! mikey.

And Justice for All

Important stuff coming up. Since Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens managed to outlast President Bush's final term, President Obama gets a chance to put another person on the high court. No matter who he manages to get appointed, it will almost surely be a loss for progressive politics on the Supreme Court. Justice Stevens has the unique ability to gently guide and walk the line on controversial decisions and his legal theories and judgments are held in wide regard. Stevens is like the wise grandfather figure. Who wouldn't at least listen to what the old bastard has to say? Who could not at least give his advice and wisdom a chance? He was appointed by Gerald Fucking Ford, for Christ's sakes! That means that Stevens already had had a distinguished legal career behind him before I was even born. No wonder at almost 90 years old he is ready for a little rest.

I give Justice Stevens a check-plus for refusing to give up his post while W. was still in office. I think that it is awesome that Stevens was 87 years old and still giving the finger and saying "Fuck you!" to the President. That is awesome. Especially when you consider that he was appointed by a Republican in the first place. That should tell you something about the eight years we were under Carl Rove and Dick Cheney's conservative stranglehold. I could only hope that at that age we all would still feel that sense of rebellion, that burning fire that comes from sticking to one's guns.

The pressure is now on President Obama to find someone that a deeply divided Congress and nation can find acceptable. For sure, the President is going to name someone left leaning. Most of the names mentioned so far certainly are sympathetic to the Democrat's tendencies. But President Obama, and all Presidents, would be well off to find Supreme Court candidates that are truly independent thinkers and that are really looking out for the welfare of the people. The purpose of the Court is to review and cast judgment on that politicized nonsense that are the laws created by Congress. Recently, there has been lots of bellyaching about "activist judges," but in reality, we wouldn't want anyone but an activist judge on the high court. That is the whole point. But what we need is an activist for the truth, not for the political ramblings and bullet points of one party or another.

So if one candidate or another tickles your fancy, write to your favorite congressperson and voice your opinion. They are there to serve you; you pay their salary, make them work towards the things in which you believe. And if you dislike one or more of the candidates, write about that too. Dissent is a quickly evaporating skill that is employed far too little. It is your duty to make your voice heard above the din of the masses. Sing loud, sing proud!

Sabot on South Street

We would like to turn our attention to another Philadelphia organization that we feel is deserving of praise and commendation. For more than 30 years, Wooden Shoe Books has been pushing the envelope and encouraging Philadelphia to turn not towards government for solutions to society's woes, but to use personal resources and sacrifice towards the common good, recognizing that what is good for the community is good for the individual.

Located at 5th and South Streets, Wooden Shoe is run entirely by volunteers and is 100% not for profit. Though not a huge space, they make the most of their walls, with floor to ceiling literature organized by general topic. Looking for books on the Cuban experience in America? Wooden Shoe is your place. Need references on ethical treatment of cattle in slaughterhouses? Hit up the Wooden Shoe. Noam Chomsky, the Black Panthers, the IRA, communism and other controversial topics abound in the Shoe. You will find resources that come from many different perspectives and their selection goes way beyond what you will find in Barnes and Nobel or Borders. They also have a computer free for all to use, dubbed "the People's Computer," and probably the only table of children's books that will educate the parents also. Also, they have the city's best selection of photocopied 'zines, from nationally recognized publications like Cometbus to much more local publications from various artists, anarchists and freak power folks.

Wooden Shoe also presents workshops, performances, readings, films etc. at least once a week. This is stuff that flies way under the radar--authors you have not (yet) heard of, films that don't even make art house theaters, but the intimate space provides an opportunity to interact with the artist(s) whose work is on display and talk to other like minded individuals. In addition to art events, there are also workshops for methods of community organizing, maintaining grassroots integrity and other ways to get directly involved in making a difference in your community and connect with those who would also help. Most events are free, but you do need to reserve space by email for more popular gatherings.

The Wooden Shoe moniker is taken from the industrial revolution when French peasants would throw their wooden footwear into machinery in order to get a much needed rest while working insanely long hours. A Sin of Omission

Feline Squeamish #1 and Feline Squeamish #2 have asked us to bring something to your attention. We let the weekend go by without mentioning Save the Florida Panther Day, the culmination of Save the Florida Panther Week. Our apologies; let us correct this immediately.

With a population count at less than one hundred according to most sources, the Florida Panther (appropriately the state animal) is a kitty that teeter-totters on the brink of extinction. Like most animals on the endangered list, the main cause of their dwindling numbers is destruction of their natural habitat and the introduction of highways (and the vehicles that travel on them) into their grounds. The interruption of the natural cycles of flora because of wildfire prevention and introduction of canals to corral the water table for development has also led to a decrease in the deer population, the Panther's major prey. Because of its severely limited numbers, the Florida Panther also suffers from the genetic repercussions of inbreeding.

Recently, Florida has put several programs into place so as to not sit idly by an let this happen. When large parts of Alligator Alley (a major east-west route across the state) were renovated in the mid 1990's, they included underpasses for wildlife to safely move from one side of the highway to the other, as well as netting and fences that encourage use of the underpasses. Alligator Alley and other highways that cross panther country have limited speed limits at dusk and dawn, when panthers are most active. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has worked with a big cat rescue facility in Texas on a captive breeding program, which incorporates, but is not limited to, cross-breeding with eastern Texas varieties of big cats. (Before their numbers were thinned, these felines regularly interacted with each other as their natural habitats overlapped. This is an effort to recreate that and eliminate some of the genetic complications from inbred cats.) Through these and other efforts, the population has increased from about 30 in 1990 to almost 100 currently. Despite this small victory, the Florida Panther remains critically endangered and continues to struggle. This year already has seen 14 panthers hit by cars and killed.

Happy Freedom of Information Day!

That's right Squeamies! Today is James Madison's 269th birthday and in honor of the Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, we celebrate the government's requirement to provide, at least to some degree, transparency. Madison had this crazy idea that the size and power of the ruling body should be limited and the governed not be burdened by an intrusive federal power. As a young man, Madison defended many victims of religious oppression and became a protege of Thomas Jefferson in the Virginia legislature. Madison went on to author large parts of the Constitution, including the section that set up the then revolutionary three branch method of government and implemented the check and balance system. At first, Madison opposed the Bill of Rights because he feared that the federal government might claim any power that was not specifically limited in the Bill. When he saw that resistance was futile and that the Bill of Rights was going to happen, he worked tirelessly to ensure that they were the specific list of personal liberties that we know today and that they in no way expanded the oversight of Congress, the President or the court system. Madison fully believed that government was there to serve its citizens and not the other way around, and that it was in the best interest of the country to have an informed people. In his honor, on Freedom of Information Day, the American Library Association passes out the Madison Awards, given to those who best champion the public's right to know and access to public information.

Now, of course, there are severe limitations on what the government is willing to hand over to you, but it is comforting to know that you can't be punished for asking. For the most part, so long as it isn't a matter of national security and it doesn't fall under that hazy cloud of executive privilege, those records are open to you. So celebrate today by asking for anything that interests you. You may genuinely need the information, or it may just be because you can, but make your government work for you. It is there for your benefit and you should take advantage of it. You can find a link below to the Department of Justice which provides information on how to go about obtaining the knowledge you desire. If you are interested in state records, those fall under your particular state's own Freedom of Information Act, which may differ significantly from the federal version. You will need to search for the state information you desire; try looking under "open records law," "public records act," of "sunshine law," if you are having issues as each state has given it its own title. Good luck and have fun! Exercise your rights so we don't lose them!

Good News and Bad News

After much time and heartache, beloved Sacramento psych-metal outfit Deftones have released some new music. In late 2008, Deftones were poised to unleash a new album, Eros, when founding bassist Chi Cheng was involved horrific car accident that left him in a coma. The band retreated within itself, shelved Eros, and kept pretty quiet, with occasional update through oneloveforchi.com. Cheng remains in a semi-conscious state, but the Deftones have soldiered on with the assistance of Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega, and recorded a full new album to be released in May titled Diamond Eyes. The first single, "Rocket Skates," has been made available for free though gunsrazorsknives.com It is typical Deftones--heavy, winding bass and downtuned guitars, weird shifts in rhythm and lead singer Chino Moreno alternating between spacey singing and his almost inhuman screaming. The best part of this is that the singles are rarely the strongest songs on Deftone's albums, so this only adds to the anticipation of their new full length record.

On the sad side, Philadelphia must say goodbye to DIY, all ages and completely illegal performance space Terrordome. Located in the basement of a West Philly house, Terrordome put on 60 mostly local shows since its inception in July of last year. It is sad to see performance art spaces like these be forced out, but it is hardly a surprise. As they gain more notoriety, and eventually publicity, the neighborhood quickly tires of house parties that include three or four live (and loud) bands that draw larger and larger crowds. Let's face it, there are few concerns about alcohol consumption, capacity limits and corralling the overflow the since it is not a bar, and following the shows 100 drunk punks, metalheads and artsy types are unleashed into the streets in a residential part of the city, their hearing and sensibilities damaged. That being said, basement shows are pretty much a necessity for up and coming bands that cannot afford to play legitimate venues because they do not yet draw the size crowd needed to book a show. The Terrordome crew did do the best that they could, ending shows at a reasonable hour (10 PM) and doing their best to stay underground by not publicly announcing their addy. But as so many good things are, successful basement spots are usually short lived and we just have to appreciate them for all the good things they did do.

For more info on the Deftones and to cop their new single visit their websites. Also, Chi Cheng's family continues to need money for his on going medical treatments. Like most musicians, he is uninsured and anything you can do to support his family is greatly appreciated.

Pepsi's Dump not as Stinky as Expected!

Ok, so we promised oh-so-long ago to keep checking up on Pepsi's "Refresh Everything" Project* and I must admit that the results look like they may actually come to fruition. This shit seems pretty legitimate. The first group of projects have been voted on and, so long as my eyes don't deceive me, Pepsi is going to fund the top ten projects in three price brackets (5K, 10K, and 15K) and is going to fund the top two in the top bracket (20k). Color me impressed. Among the projects funded are programs to help senior citizens take care of their pets, ship Girl Scout cookies to troops serving abroad, build playgrounds, and encourage all-ages music spaces in underserved areas. Pepsi has also announced that they are going to do at least one additional round, and may continue the contest each month throughout the year. Pepsi Co., we here at I Hope You're not Squeamish, give you a check plus for following through on your promises. We hope that your next round is even more successful than this one was.

Check out www.refresheverything.com for the first round winners and to vote for the second group of proposed ideas. Support the causes you believe in by spending Pepsi's money!

I Guess I Just Wasn't Made For These Times

I have spent the last few days feeling painfully affected by Haiti, and the lack of progress that is being made as they try to recover from the earthquake. I find myself on engrossed in the pictures being released, just unable to comprehend the sense of hopeless starting to settle over Port-au-Prince. And despite the fact that I cannot divorce my attention and gaze from these images, I cannot find a phrase that accurately describes the hollow in the pit of my stomach. I cannot wrap words around the feelings that make my palms sweat. Though certainly not the first in even my lifetime, rare are the times when you turn on the television to see headlines of mass graves and bodies rotting in the streets and I feel limited in my ability to calculate my emotions. I could regurgitate the statistics, the cold facts, but that is CNN's job, and four days of contemplating yielded few results in what I wanted to communicate. Liony Batista, a project manager for Food for the Poor in charge of importing supplies from the Dominican Republic, said "I don't think that a word has been invented for what is happening in Haiti." The impact of natural disaster of this magnitude on a country as desperate as Haiti is perhaps just not meant for words.

Please continue to do what you can to help. Prayers count as help, too.

Haiti

I'm not even going to pretend to be a news source for what is going on in Haiti right now. All I am going to say is that these people are severely, completely and honestly fucked. Food, water and other supplies are starting to reach Port-au-Prince, but the airport (and, reportedly, the seaport) is in such a state of destruction, that they are having trouble simply unloading the necessities off the planes and boats, much less dispersing them among the population. Right now, the Red Cross is estimating that 45,000 to 50,000 are dead. That number could climb as the days wear on and people simply can't get anything to drink. Please pray for this impoverished country as they continue to struggle.

There are several organizations that are already set up to help.
The American Red Cross
UNICEF
Save the Children

You can text HAITI to "90999" to automatically donate $10 to the American Red Cross. The charge will show up on you wireless bill. CNN is reporting that this , in addition to efforts started on FaceBook and Twitter, have already helped raise $3 million. We need to keep this momentum going. It is going to take years to rebuild--$3 million could be spent in the next few days easily.

President Obama, along with former presidents Clinton and Bush (W.), are working round the clock in an attempt to best serve the victims of the earthquake, and are trying to get both military and civilian relief workers to clear roads, so supplies can be distributed. It's nice to see that, if only for a moment, we are able to put our political differences aside to help those less fortunate. I Hope You're Not Squeamish offers full accolades to all world leaders and volunteers who are using their influence, or their hands, or whatever they have, to help.

Burlesque and Bully Breeds

We found a wonderfully sinister, subversive organization from one of the most unlikely of sources--a Christmas present received by Ma and Pa Squeamish. Pinups for Pitbulls combines some really decent looking, retro pinup chicks with some really badass pitbulls and has put out a calender for at least the last three years. Based out of South Philly, money raised goes to help pitbulls and other bully breed animals. In addition, and more importantly, Pinups for Pitbulls also sponsors pitbulls while they are rehomed, provides resources for rescuing pitbulls, and hosts events and a website to distribute information to correct the misconception that bully breed dogs are vicious or dangerous.

The term bully breed animals can refer to pure bred dogs such as true Pitbulls, Dobermans, or Rottweilers, etc., but can also mean dogs mixed with any of the above or even tough looking versions of other purebreds such as American Bulldogs or German Shepherds. In some instances, towns and cities have instituted laws and ordinances that limit ownership or even blatantly ban these breeds. These laws are based on ignorance and misunderstanding and only further these misplaced labels. There is nothing to support that pitbulls, rotties or most other breeds are inherently more aggressive than most other breeds. The problem is that idiots teach those kinds of dogs to be aggressive or abuse them until the animal does not know any better. Most bully breed dogs that are raised in normal environments are sweet and good natured and are perfectly safe to have as a family pet. However, paranoia over dogs that simply look tough as hell often gets the best of us and as a result, normal dogs suffer when breed specific laws are passed. Shelters have issues dealing with these animals, who sometimes come in damaged from unforgiving circumstances, and they are put down at a higher rate. The animals suffer for the poor choices made by their owners and because of the flawed theory that they are naturally more ferocious.

While, of course, I Hope You're Not Squeamish fully endorse rescuing a dog that may not have another shot, we urge you to do your research before you do so. Many of these dogs need attention, compassion and patience beyond that of a normal dog. You must be prepared and informed on the proper way to handle and care for these animals. The Pitbull Resource Center can provide you with a significant amount of information if you are considering rescuing a bully breed dog. (Or any animal, really. There are right and wrong ways to introduce an new animal into your home and your decisions can have significant effects on both you and your pet. Be intelligent; read up before you adopt.)

Pinups for Pitbulls deserves accolades for shining a light on this often overlooked canine issue. They may be showing us their gams, but they're showing their smarts, too. Buy their calender, perfect to be hung in the garage or workshop, or in the kitchen if you got guts.

Pepsi takes a Dump Super Bowel XLIV

Congrats to Pepsi for taking a break from being a totally evil, insane, barbaric corporation by announcing that, for the first time in 23 years, they will not participate in the stupefying situation that is Super Bowl advertising. Pepsi made sure that it was well publicized that instead, it is investing that money in its "Refresh Project." In addition to being a marketing campaign (apparently Pepsi has used the tag line "Refresh Everything" for a year, who knew?), the Refresh Project awards grants in five categories: Heath, Arts & Culture, Food & Shelter, The Planet, Neighborhoods and Education. Ten days in January, applications will be accepted for the grants via refresheverything.com. The site will also provide tool kits for preparing the grant application. I had trouble finding exactly what kind of funding Pepsi has committed towards this project. According to one MSN article, Pepsi is hoping that other companies and investors will partner with them to provide even more funds. Pepsi's fancy pants front page claims that "millions" is promised.

So, I'll give Pepsi the chance to put their money where their mouth is. But, as always, I expect some results. I signed up for their newsletter, so I'm going to keep close tabs on exactly how many projects they end up sponsoring. I fully expect that Pepsi will find some way to back out of this, and not much will ever come of it, and it will all just be a spectacle to put their soda in headlines for a little while and look a little less bloodthirsty, oh, and by the way, save $30 million or so in advertising dollars. Because, let's face it, most of the Super Bowl commercials, as entertaining as they are, are for products that ALREADY FUCKING SELL. That's why the companies can afford the advertising. Holy Shit! It's not like without a Super Bowl ad, people will forget about Pepsi or stop buying their product. So they can simply not do the ads, save some dough and look like sweethearts because they are going to "invest in community."

Now my heart isn't completely made out of stone. No no no no no no. I truly hope that Pepsi gives a whole bunch of people a whole bunch of money to make this world better. So I don't wish them ill. Instead, what I propose is to flood the fuckers with ideas. Let's give them a chance give back. I know there are a couple of you people out there who went to business school who can draft up some fantastic plans and dazzle the pants off Pepsi. Let's give them some ideas worth funding.

A call to arms, my friends! Spend Pepsi's money!

Kicked in the Butt by Love

Alarm! Phillip Hill, guitarist for greaser punks the Teen Idols, is in urgent need of your help. Leaving a bar in Nashville several nights ago, Hill saw four assholes attacking a young woman. Being a standup dude, he stepped in to help her out. He was enough distraction for her to escape without further harm, but Hill got the absolute shit kicked out of him. They busted his face open, broke several of his ribs and collapsed one of his lungs. Believe it or not, the Teen Idols don't make enough to insure the members of their band (shocker!), so needless to say, he has some remarkable hospital bills mounting. Mass Giorgini and the fine folks at Sonic Iguana Studios has set up a fund to help out. You can contribute via paypal. We here at I Hope You're not Squeamish salute Phillip Hill for helping a damsel in distress, taking his beating like a man and still smiling (or at least trying to smile) while getting his picture taking in a hospital gown.
